The PathoPig project was launched by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) together with various partners in order to promote the early detection of animal diseases, epizootics and zoonoses in pigs and to reinforce gross pathology as a diagnostic tool so that an aetiological diagnosis can be made.

To participate in the project, at least one of the following 4 criteria must be met:

  • Frequently recurring, therapy-resistant problems of unknown cause
  • high morbidity and / or mortality rates
  • unusual symptoms
  • increased use of antibiotics.

The pigs must be sent in via PHIS via the herd veterinarian or via the SGD pig health service.

The PathoPig project is integrated into the Pig Health Info System (PHIS). This is an app for recording pig health data so that this data can be collected and analyzed promptly. The findings are recorded digitally and can therefore be evaluated in a standardized way.

As of May 1 2023, a completed anamnesis application must be filled out in the Pig Health Info System (PHIS) so that the pigs can be examined as part of the PathoPig program.

As of May 1, pig inspections and subsequent further examinations will be financially supported by the BLV as follows: The livestock owner pays 50% of the case costs and additional costs if the cost ceiling is exceeded:

BLV cost ceiling for suckling piglets - fattening pigs:

  • 1 animal CHF 100
  • 2 animals CHF 300
  • 3 animals CHF 400

BLV cost ceiling for breeding sows / boars

  • 1 animal CHF 300
  • 2-3 animals CHF 400.-

The BLV financially supports one case work-up, i.e. one submission (comprising 1-3 animals) per herd and per herd problem per year.
