Sundays and public holidays:

  • Only cases of epidemics or suspected zoonoses are necropsied.

Necropsies on Sundays and public holidays are carried out by a senior diagnostician at the ITPA. Please note that the Sunday and public holiday service is geared towards very urgent (generally infectious or possibly highly contagious) emergencies. Due to the high amount of work involved, we charge an emergency surcharge of CHF 1000. A cost credit note is therefore required and should be sent to us in writing if possible; the pathologist responsible will contact the sending veterinarian by telephone.

Please also note that deliveries on weekends or public holidays outside opening hours (8:00 - 9:00 h) are not possible, and euthanasia of animals is not performed by the ITPA at weekends.

Euthanasia of animals for diagnostic dissections

  • It is possible to euthanize pigs for diagnostic purposes at the Institute of Animal Pathology. Euthanasia is carried out in accordance with animal welfare regulations by means of captive bolt or electrical stunning and subsequent bleeding. This service must be requested or announced in advance by the examining or referring veterinarian by telephone (Tel.: +41 31 684 24 68). Euthanasia cannot be performed by the ITPA on weekends.
