It is essential to ensure that non-fixed samples are sent to us as quickly as possible (express mail or similar) or in person, see opening hours.
Please note: When sending carcasses to be necropsied on Saturdays, it is essential to use a courier service, as there is no parcel delivery (not even SwissExpress). Parcels can be delivered from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Saturday morning at the latest. Parcels are not delivered on Sundays and public holidays.
In addition to postal delivery, our customers have the option of using the courier service of the diagnostic laboratories of the Vetsuisse Faculty (bacteriology, parasitology, pathology) for samples weighing up to 30 kg. A collection of samples directly from the practice can be arranged with our partner Meier-Express by sending an e-mail to info@meier-express.ch or calling 0848 44 44 00. We recommend that you make initial contact by telephone. Meier-Express will be happy to tell you whether your practice is in the collection area and when and how the samples should be made available for collection.
The Meier-Express courier service is a service paid for by the Institute of Animal Pathology. The Institute of Veterinary Pathology accepts no liability for errors made by the courier service (e.g. samples or animal carcasses that are lost or delivered too late and therefore impaired for examination).
Please observe the regulations when sending animal carcasses and organ samples. Improperly packaged samples may not be transported by the courier or express service.
Principle of 3-layer packaging:
- Primary container/packaging: liquid-tight
- Secondary container/packaging: liquid-tight
- Between primary and secondary container: absorbent material in case of leakage
- Outer packaging: Leak-proof and shockproof box (e.g. Sagex/Styropor)
Marking with label UN3373
Please note: As there have been repeated problems caused by improperly packaged carcasses, the outer packaging must now be leak-proof and shock-proof. The courier must not open the packaging to check that the 1st and 2nd layers are leak-proof and must therefore insist on this measure.
We also recommend
- Cool unfixed organ samples or animal carcasses using leak-proof cooling elements (but make sure that samples do not freeze through)
- Insulating outer packaging (insulated box)
- Enclose application form in separate packaging (moisture protection)
- If cremation is desired, enclose the completed and signed cremation application form in separate packaging (moisture protection)
- Interested customers can collect polystyrene transport boxes that have already been used once for harmless goods from us free of charge. As we only have limited storage capacity for such boxes, please contact us in advance by e-mail at itpa.diagnostiksekretariat.vetsuisse@unibe.ch.
