combined Residency/PhD program

PhD Programm
VONSCHUBERTPHOTO

For veterinary graduates who want to pursue a career in animal pathology, we strongly recommend a dual training in anatomic pathology and biomedical research. We therefore offer the possibility of combining state of the art pathology and research training. This challenging combined program leads to board certification and an internationally recognized PhD title.

After an initial basic anatomic pathology training period of 1.5 – 2 years (identical to the first half of the residency program), in which the candidates identify a suitable research group, candidates switch into one of the established research groups at the ITPA or within the faculty for their PhD studies. Here they will be enrolled in the PhD program of the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences while still maintaining active links to the diagnostic pathology unit via seminars and few weeks of diagnostic duties per year. After finishing their PhD, candidates return to the diagnostic unit to finalize their anatomic pathology training and prepare for board examination by the ECVP or ACVP.

The entire program lasts about 6 years and includes all internship requirements set by the ECVP.

Language requirements

Clients of our diagnostic service are mainly from the German and French speaking parts of Switzerland. Our reports are written in German. We therefore require minimum German language knowledge at the start of a residency (comparable to A2 level) and continuous improvement within the first year of residency (minimum level C1 after 1 year). In addition, fluency in English is mandatory.

Application procedure

Open jobs are posted on our webpage and other sources such as the ECVP webpage. Spontaneous/unsolicited applications are also welcome. Applications should contain a motivation letter, a CV incl. publication list, 2 names and addresses of references, and marks you received during your education.
